Pacific Rim 2 Officially Dead - Guillermo Del Toro In Talks For Fantastic Voyage

It looks as though the on-again, off-again sequel to 2013′s ‘Pacific Rim’ is officially off, once and for all.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the follow-up to director Guillermo Del Toro’s monsters-versus-robots epic is “off the table indefinitely” - and in its place, del Toro has entered talks with 20th Century Fox to helm a rather different sci-fi spectacular.

Del Toro is reportedly gearing up to take the helm on ‘Fantastic Voyage,’ a remake of the 1966 sci-fi classic which starred Raquel Welch and Donald Pleasance as members of a team who are miniaturized in a submarine and injected into the body of a dying scientist in order to save his life.

James Cameron will produce the remake, and the script is to be co-written by David Goyer (who wrote one of del Toro’s early hits, ‘Blade II’) with Justin Rhodes.

It seems that the lukewarm reaction to del Toro’s 2015 movie ‘Crimson Peak’ may have contributed in part to studio Universal finally putting ‘Pacific Rim 2′ on ice.

Del Toro previously worked with James Cameron on his passion project ‘At The Mountains of Madness,’ before this was also cancelled by Universal. (All this, and he can’t get a greenlight for ‘Hellboy 3′ either.)

No release date or casting for ‘Fantastic Voyage’ have been announced yet.
