Variety report that Cailee Spaeny, an actress and singer with only two screen credits to her name, has landed the female lead in director Steven S DeKnight’s follow-up to Guillermo del Toro’s 2013 monsters-versus-robots movie.

As the plot of the film is being kept closely under wraps, no details of Spaeny’s character have been revealed – but it seems fair to assume she might wind up co-piloting a Jaeger with Boyega. The ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ actor has been cast as the son of Stacker Pentacost, Idris Elba’s character in the original.

Scott Eastwood is also believed to have been cast in ‘Pacific Rim: Maelstrom,’ and it is rumoured that Ron Perlman will reprise his role as black market kaiju parts salesman Hannibal Chau. DeKnight has also teased that an as-yet unrevealed ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’ actor is on board.

However, original leading man Charlie Hunnam has confirmed he will not be back – and thus far there does not seem to be any indication that ‘Pacific Rim’ female lead Rinko Kikuchi will return.

Cailee Spaeny’s only roles to date have been in indie movies ‘The Shoes’ and ‘Counting to 1000.’

‘Pacific Rim: Maelstrom’ is set to begin production next month in China, and is due in cinemas February 2018.
