Paddington 3 – aka Paddington in Peru – is coming to cinemas in November, and we've finally got the first trailer to savour.

As the title revealed, the much-anticipated new movie sees Paddington head to Peru with the Brown family and Mrs Bird to visit Aunt Lucy at the Home for Retired Bears.

However, when they get there, Aunt Lucy is nowhere to be seen and Paddington is told by the Reverend Mother (Olivia Colman), who runs the home, that she's left on "some sort of quest" and they have no idea where she's gone.

So Paddington heads into the forest with swashbuckler Hunter Cabot (Antonio Banderas) to reunite with Aunt Lucy.

At a trailer preview event today (June 12) attended by Digital Spy, director Dougal Wilson explained why the third movie had to shake things up by moving out of London.

"The first film gives us a bit of information about where Paddington came from and how he found his home in London, And then the second story, he almost loses that home, but in doing so consolidates his community in London and his friends," he said.

"We thought for the third film, it was very appropriate to return to Peru, but this time take his London friends and community with him and have an adventure there and in doing so, fill in some of the missing pieces about what we didn't learn in the first two films."

Perhaps the most exciting thing is that Wilson revealed that Olivia Colman has a musical number in Paddington 3, likely teased in the trailer with the brief Sound of Music-esque shot of the Reverend Mother with a guitar.

Paddington in Peru will see the return of Ben Whishaw as Paddington, while Hugh Bonneville, Julie Walters, Madeleine Harris and Samuel Joslin will be back as the Browns.

However, Emily Mortimer will take over the role of Mrs Brown from Sally Hawkins, with Hawkins previously saying it was the "right time to hand the reins over to another".

As well as Olivia Colman and Antonio Banderas, the third movie features newcomer Carla Tous as Hunter Cabot's daughter Gina, a role originally meant to be played by Rachel Zegler.

Dougal Wilson will take the reins as director, taking over from Paul King who helmed the first two movies. However, King has still written the story alongside Simon Farnaby and Mark Burton.

Speaking about his decision not to return to direct, King said: "After ten years of working on the Paddington movies, I feel absurdly protective of the little bear, and I'm delighted that Dougal will be there to hold his paw as he embarks on his third big-screen adventure."

Paddington in Peru will be released in UK cinemas on November 8, 2024 and in US cinemas on January 17, 2025.
