It’s not often you see Panasonic TVs in the cheap aisles, but this smart 4K flatscreen will have you doing a double take.

Extremely well equipped for the price, it’s a 4K HDR screen intended for film fans that don’t want to sacrifice picture quality.

What caught our attention at this price point was its universal HDR support. HDR, as you probably know, comes in different flavours. In addition to regular vanilla HDR, it also recognises Dolby Vision HDR, as used by Netflix, and HDR10+, favoured by Amazon Prime Video.

Both systems optimise brightness and contrast on a scene by scene basis, to ensure you always get to see pictures how filmmakers intended, great for viewers who subscribe to both streaming services.

Naturally, there’s plenty of detail in its big 4K picture too. With 50-inches to play with, this is clearly a cracking screen for that big movie night in.

The HX580 should satisfy soap addicts too. It’s Freeview Play enabled, which means not only do you get all the catch-up TV players for all the major channels, but there’s a huge library of box sets free to stream plus an easy to use rollback programme guide to help find those shows you might have missed.

While this TV doesn’t use Panasonic’s own My Home Screen smart platform, it still offers Netflix and Amazon Prime. So you’ll be OK for Bridgerton and The Boys.

The set’s design is quietly elegant, in the classic Panasonic style, with a thin bezel and central pedestal. It will fit in with any decor.

Rear connections include four HDMI inputs, to accommodate a set top box, disc player and other toys.

Currys actually has a bundle deal that combines the HX580 with a Panasonic DMP-BDT167 Blu-ray player (for £508.99), making this a solid home cinema upgrade if your old DVD player has seen better days.
