Paul Mescal has landed his next movie role, teaming up with Ridley Scott again after Gladiator 2.

Deadline has reported that the Normal People and All of Us Strangers actor is currently in advanced negotiations to star in The Dog Stars, with Disney's 20th Century Studios set to release it.

The film is set in a near-future where humanity has been brought to the brink by a pandemic, and follows a pilot living on an airbase with an ex-marine and his dog.

He receives a message on his radio, and decides to get in his plane and leave the base to try and find out what's out there, despite all the risks involved.

The project is an adaptation of Peter Heller's novel of the same name, with Twisters and The Revenant's Mark L Smith on scripting duties.

Filming is expected to take place in the spring, in line with Scott's infamously quick turnarounds, after Mescal wraps up A Streetcar Named Desire on Broadway. Once that's filmed, Scott already has a Bee Gees biopic lined up to shoot up late next year.

Right now, Scott and Mescal are on the promotional trail for Gladiator II, which releases in just a couple of days.

Ahead of its release, critics who have seen the film already have been allowed to post their initial reactions.

Scott's direction has been praised, as has Mescal's performance, but it looks like Denzel Washington might be the one who steals the show, which is quite interesting considering the backlash that his accent got when the first trailers were released.

Gladiator 2 will be released in UK cinemas on November 15 and in US cinemas on November 22.
