Paul Mescal offers Gladiator 2 filming update
Paul Mescal is having a very good time right now. The Irish actor just scored himself his first-ever Oscar nomination for his role in Charlotte Wells’ Aftersun, and soon after, it was announced that he snagged a lead role in Gladiator 2.
And now, we have an exciting update about the filming of the sequel from the man himself.
At the BAFTAs earlier this month, Deadline asked Mescal about when he starts filming on Gladiator 2.
"I'm not sure what the exact start date is, but it's in the summer," he answered.
When asked about whether he's begun the process of bulking up for the role, he said with a laugh: "Mate, what are you saying?"
"But, yes, that's in process," he added.
Mescal joins Ridley Scott's long-awaited sequel to the blockbuster 2000 film as Lucius, the son of Lucilla and nephew of Commodus — characters played by Connie Nielsen and Joaquin Phoenix, respectively, in the original movie.
Spencer Treat Clark played Lucius in Gladiator, and Mescal will play a grown-up version of the character in the sequel.
The Normal People actor is currently nominated for his very first Academy award in the Best Actor category for playing single father Calum Paterson in the film Aftersun. He's nominated alongside fellow Irishman and The Banshees of Inisherin actor Colin Farrell, Elvis's Austin Butler, The Whale's Brendan Fraser and Living's Bill Nighy.
Reacting to his Oscar nomination, Mescal said in a statement: "This is truly a special moment for everyone involved in Aftersun. To be recognised by the Academy is such an insane honour and I'm so utterly grateful.
"I want to dedicate this nomination to my two friends Charlotte and Frankie, who I love dearly! This is bananas, thank you!"
Gladiator 2 doesn't have a release date yet.
