Paul Mescal and Saoirse Ronan's new Prime Video movie Foe, a sci-fi from Garth Davis, has been given a release date.

Foe follows Mescal and Ronan as a couple whose secluded life on a farm is disrupted when a stranger arrives with a proposal that changes their lives forever.

The movie played at this year's London Film Festival, but audiences will be able to stream it at home on Prime Video from January 5.

The film is based on Iain Reid's novel and Reid co-wrote the script with Davis, who previously directed Lion. However, despite the involvement of exciting talent, the film has become a disappointment for all involved.

It landed a low Rotten Tomatoes score upon its release and soon set unwanted records for both Mescal and Ronan. It became Mescal's lowest-rated movie of all time on Rotten Tomatoes, while it is Ronan's third lowest-rated movie.

However, this is just one step back for Mescal, whose career is going from strength to strength. He will soon be leading the cast of Gladiator 2 alongside the likes of Pedro Pascal, Denzel Washington, Joseph Quinn, Connie Nielsen and Matt Lucas.

However, Mescal recently revealed that he was actually nervous to meet Pascal, explaining: "I was too afraid to go up to him. He came up and just seemed so genuine; I'm really looking forward to hanging out with him."

He also revealed how he's feeling about starring in the mammoth epic movie: "I can't tell you how stressed I am talking about that film in particular, because it's definitely the biggest one I've done. I feel really excited, but it's difficult to get away from the legacy of the [first] film a bit.

He continued: "I think it's really well written and it pays homage to the first one, but it's very much something that I think I can step into and make comfortably my own."

Foe will be released on Prime Video on January 5.
