Pet Sematary: Bloodlines, the prequel to 2019's Pet Sematary, has landed a low score on Rotten Tomatoes following brutal reviews.

The new horror film is based on an "untold chapter" from Stephen King's classic novel. The plot follows a young Jud Crandall (Jackson White) as he discovers a local cemetery where the dead rise up.

Set 50 years before the events of the original film, Bloodlines also stars Forrest Goodluck, Jack Mulhern, Henry Thomas, Pam Grier and David Duchovny, with Lindsey Anderson Beer on both writing and directing duties.

Despite a stacked cast and the approval of King, Bloodlines has received a largely negative reception thus far, scoring a meagre 22% approval rating from its first 23 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.

You can read a selection of the reviews below:

"'Who asked for this?' is the question such projects invoke, and Lindsey Anderson Beer's film never comes up with a satisfying answer."

Bloody Disgusting

"It's a prequel that doesn't care for tidy canon; the aim is to use these familiar characters and the setting to induce scares. It's not helped by editing that feels like much of this choppy story was left on the editing room floor."

"Pet Sematary: Bloodlines feels like something that died, was buried, and then resurrected worse off than before."

Mama's Geeky

"Has some cool kills and suspenseful thrills, but ultimately this made-for streaming movie never fully delivers."

"Sometimes dead is better, and that's a lesson that Pet Sematary: Bloodlines probably should've taken to heart."

The Hollywood News

"The potential of Pet Sematary: Bloodlines is completely wasted, instead presenting itself as a generic and rather bland horror film that fails to connect in any significant way."

Pet Sematary: Bloodlines is released on October 6 in the US and October 7 in the UK and Ireland on Paramount+.
