This week sees the release of 'Spring Breakers', the lurid new thriller from Harmony Korine. Phoebe Cates in Fast Times At Ridgemont High (1982)
Most men of a certain age will know this iconic scene. A 19-year-old Phoebe Cates gamely agreed to exit a swimming pool in a red two-piece as part of the movie's slow-motion fantasy sequence. "Hi Brad," she purred. "You know how cute I always thought you were." Then, off comes the bikini top. A moment to remember for teen boys everywhere.

Carrie Fisher in Star Wars: Episode VI – Return Of The Jedi (1984)
Another formative moment for geeks around the world, the reveal of Fisher wearing a gold bikini as one of Jabba's slaves was a real eye-opener – especially as she spent the first two 'Star Wars' movies beneath an unflattering white curtain. The gold bikini cemented Carrie Fisher as an 80s sex symbol and banished the memory of those silly hair-muffs.

Raquel Welch in One Million Years BC (1966)
Raquel Welch was part of the first wave of cinema's bikini sirens. If we're being brutally honest, she was famous not for her acting skills but her ability to fill out a two-piece, and there was no bikini more iconic than the fur-covered number she wore in prehistoric Hammer horror 'One Million Years BC'. This classic image in poster form would adorn thousands of bedrooms.

Salma Hayek in From Dusk Till Dawn (1996)
Having found solace in a dodgy dive, fugitives George Clooney and Quentin Tarantino gaze on with their jaws agape as exotic dancer Santanico Pandemonium emerges clad in what must be the most structurally-sound bikini ever engineered. Salma Hayek's sultry snake-handler entrances the men with her slinky routine, then turns into a vampire beast and eats them.

"I was about to make an ice cream sundae. You want one?" Amazingly, James Van Der Beek's high school footballer turned down Ali Larter's unorthodox way to serve a whipped cream treat. Maybe he was lactose intolerant?

Deborah Kerr in From Here To Eternity (1953)
The sputum-covered clinch between Burt Lancaster and a bikini-clad Deborah Kerr is ranked as cinema's most romantic beach embrace, until Sly Stallone and Carl Weathers topped it with 'Rocky III'. This was risqué stuff back in 1953.

Halle Berry in Die Another Day (2002)
This bikini scene with Halle Berry - a homage to Ursula Andress' ocean exit - was a 007 'Greatest Hits' package. Pierce Brosnan, oggling her through binoculars, can only manage the below-par quip: "Magnificent view."

Sacha Baron Cohen in Borat (2006)
The owner of the most revealing bikini on this list is also the one with the most chest hair. Sacha Baron Cohen was fearless on the promo trail for 'Borat’, selling the film at Cannes by taking to the beach in a lime-green 'mankini'. What little was left to the imagination was instantly quarantined to the mental folder 'Do not open'. The movie was a great success, and Cohen won a Golden Globe with which to cover his shame.
