Pickleball is loved by Kim Kardashian and Leonardo DiCaprio - now Scotland will crown its first national champion

Scotland is holding its inaugural pickleball tournament this weekend, as 140 people look to become the nation's first champion.

There are 10,000 registered pickleball players across Scotland - with tennis coach Judy Murray, Kim Kardashian, and Leonardo DiCaprio all reported to be among the fans of this increasingly popular sport.

"Pickleball is a buzzword, everyone's talking about pickleball," said championship director Anne Smillie, explaining how the sport evolved from its invention in the US back in the 1960s.

"Pickleball is a very popular sport in America, over 15 million people play in thousands of pickleball courts that are popping up all over America."

What is pickleball?

USA Pickleball, the sport's governing body, describes it as a combination of tennis, badminton and ping-pong.

It's played on a badminton-sized court with a slightly modified tennis net, and players use paddles and a plastic ball.

The tournament in Glasgow this weekend brings together participants from all over the world.

John Rankin, from Seattle, has come to play in the Masters event.

He outlined some of the rules - including underarm serves only, each team having to play their first shot off a bounce, and no volleying is allowed in the "kitchen".

"The kitchen area is like a seven-foot deep area either side of the net," he told Sky News.

"And if you're standing in it, you cannot hit the ball in the air."

Pickleball has attracted fans of all ages and skill levels, and players of other similar sports.

"I tried it once and loved it and played ever since," said Lucy Elliot, who represented Scotland at table tennis in the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham last year, a sport she has been playing since 2006.

Terry Smith is playing in a "hybrid" exhibition event with one seated and one standing player.

"I play tennis and I love my tennis, but the tennis court is a big area to get around in a wheelchair," he said.

The Scottish National Pickleball Championship is taking place at Allander Leisure Centre in Glasgow.
