Pixar's The Incredibles 2 Leapfrogs Cars 3 On Release Schedule

Good news Pixar fans, ‘The Incredibles 2’ will be out sooner than expected… at the expense of a 'Cars’ threequel.

Director Brad Bird revealed as much, and updated us on the film’s production, while talking to Collider at the Toronto International Film Festival.

“In terms of the release date, we were originally… 'Incredibles [2]’ was supposed to happen after 'Cars [3]’, and our wheels just happened to click a little earlier so they moved us up,” explained Bird.

While neither film had a release date beyond “TBA”, the news gives us a clearer idea of Pixar’s plans for the years ahead. The earliest available slots in Pixar’s slate come in 2018.

“Release dates are a little fluid when you’re making films so far in advance,” he continued. “Some films are tougher to come together and tough nuts to crack, and other ones come together a little more quickly.

"I’m just going to work as fast as I can work well with a relatively small team because I like small teams better until you’ve got everything firmly figured out.”

Regarding progress on the film, Bird said: “I have the story arc. I’m probably three-quarters through the script, first pass through the script, but we’re already [story] boarding parts of it.

"I’ve got a lot of people that worked on the first one working on it, so we’re all having a good time with it.”

Pixar’s current release schedule has 'The Good Dinosaur’ set for this November, 'Finding Dory’ in June 2016, 'Toy Story 4’ in June 2017 and 'Coco’ in November 2017.

An unannounced film has a June 2018 release date, then there’s 'The Incredibles 2’ and 'Cars 3’. Realistically 'Incredibles 2’ could occupy that summer release date, depending on the status of that unannounced project.
