Poldark actor Richard Harrington enlisted as a Deliveroo driver after Covid-19 restricted acting work. The 45-year-old actor, known for playing Captain Blamey in the popular period drama, was left unemployed after summer 2020 projects were cancelled due to the pandemic. He has also acted in The Crown, Hinterland and Gangs of London.

The challenging circumstances prompted him to seek work as a London food delivery driver.

"I did nothing between March and September at all. I got a job with Deliveroo – I went around on my bike giving takeaways to people in London," he told BBC Wales. "I’m usually fairly fit but the first lockdown turned into a lock-in. So I was very grateful to be able to get on my bike every day.”

The creative industries have been hard hit by the pandemic. According to the Guardian, Equity, which represents people working in the arts, estimates 40 per cent of its members have had no financial support from the government’s furlough or self-employed grant schemes.

Theatre has greatly suffered in the past 12 months; many actors and those who work behind the scenes have been forced to look for alternative work or to apply for universal credit. Under the government's current roadmap (which is subject to change based on data), theatres can reopen from 17 May.
