Yahoo Movies First picture of Gary Mayhew shot dead outside Tesco Express in Brixton
Detectives have released the identity of a 25-year-old man who was shot dead outside a Tesco Express in Brixton.
Gary Mayhew, 25, was shot in the leg on Thursday morning and died in hospital several hours later.
Police are awaiting formal identification but say they are satisfied that the victim is Mr Mayhew, of Camberwell, south London.
A post-mortem revealed Mr Mayhew died from the bullet wound in his leg.
Witnesses told of hearing screaming, glass smashing and “what sounded like a shot.”
“Then all hell broke loose and they were all scattering,” one person said.
Firearms officers arrested two men after a vehicle was stopped in Asylum Road.
A 27-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder while a 37-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. They were taken to central London police stations and released on bail to return in November.
Chief Supt Colin Wingrove, responsible for policing in Lambeth and Southwark said: “I am saddened that we have lost another life to gun violence.
“I understand the shock and concern this incident has caused among the local community and I want to reassure residents that specialist officers are working tirelessly to determine who is responsible for this.
“Together we are determined to end serious violence and keep people safe. Our thoughts remain with the Gary’s family at this devastating time.”
Police are urging drivers to check their dash-cam footage in a renewed appeal.
DCI Mark Rogers said: “Any piece of information could be vital in helping us to identify those responsible for taking a young man’s life.”Extra officers will be patrolling in and around the local area and those with concerns are encouraged to approach them.
