Poltergeist Director To Make Five Nights At Freddy’s Movie

As if Gil Kenan had not done enough already to earn the disdain of elder horror fans, this one really ought to seal the deal.

Fresh from this year’s widely-panned ‘Poltergeist’ remake, Kenan has now signed on to direct ‘Five Nights At Freddy’s,’ a live-action adaptation of the horror video game series, for Warner Bros.

Deadline report that Kenan has also signed on to co-write the film with Tyler Burton Smith, whilst Roy Lee and Seth Grahame-Smith produce.

Created by game designer Scott Cawthon and known for its emphasis on jump scares, ‘Five Nights At Freddy’s’ is set in a fictional family restaurant, Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza, in which the animatronic mascots come to life at night in a murderous mood.

Launched barely a year ago in August 2014 as an android phone app, ‘Five Nights At Freddy’s’ has already spawned three follow-up games, all playing on the same basic approach of wandering dark corridors in a first-person perspective, with creepy-looking animals jumping out occasionally.

Though the response to Kenan’s ‘Poltergeist’ was mixed at best, the $35 million (approx £22 million) movie grossed just shy of $96 million (approx £61 million) at the worldwide box office, making it a reasonable commerical success.

Going from a remake of a time-honoured favourite to a big screen adaptation of a phone game would not seem likely to do much for Kenan’s cred with horror devotees - but this doesn’t necessarily mean ‘Five Nights At Freddy’s’ might not make for a decent horror movie.

It’s also worth bearing in mind that, while ‘Poltergeist’ didn’t necessarily set the world on fire, Kenan also directed 2005′s mo-cap animation ‘Monster House,’ one of the best family-friendly horror films in recent memory.

No word yet on when we can expect ‘Five Nights At Freddy’s’ to hit cinemas.
