It’s official – ‘The Purge: Election Year’ has its first trailer.
Frank Grillo returns as Leo Barnes – the formerly unnamed police Sergeant who was last seen in ‘The Purge: Anarchy’. This time, he’s joined by Elizabeth Mitchell as Senator Charlie Rowan. But with a new job as her head of security, ‘The Purge 3’ really ups the ante.
After all, what happens when she wants to end the Purge once and for all?
“Expanding the universe introduced in the hit franchise that electrified the culture and earned $200 million at the worldwide box office, Universal Pictures’ The Purge: Election Year reveals the next terrifying chapter that occurs over 12 hours of annual lawlessness sanctioned by the New Founders of America to keep this country great.”
Of course, ‘The Purge’ has gained critical acclaim for both of its previous instalments, bringing social- allegory to the realms of the home invasion thriller.
And ‘The Purge: Election Year’ pushes that even further.
“It’s been two years since Leo Barnes (Frank Grillo) stopped himself from a regrettable act of revenge on Purge Night,” says the official synopsis. “Now serving as head of security for Senator Charlie Roan (Elizabeth Mitchell), his mission is to protect her in a run for president and survive the annual ritual that targets the poor and innocent. But when a betrayal forces them onto the streets of D.C. on the one night when no help is available, they must stay alive until dawn… or both be sacrificed for their sins against the state.”
Judging from the ‘White House Down’ style trailer, ‘The Purge: Election Year’ shifts the franchise towards a far more cynical direction, shining a light on political extremism and the socioeconomic inequality that has underpinned the entire series
But will it prove to be anywhere near as sinister?
‘The Purge: Election Year’ heads to cinemas on 4 July 2016.
