Prepare for your first glimpse of the mighty Zords from the upcoming ‘Power Rangers’ – although, in-keeping with most of the publicity material to date, it’s a bit of teaser image.

Audiences familiar with the much-loved 1990s TV series ‘Mighty Morphin Power Rangers’ – or, indeed, any of the subsequent ‘Power Rangers’ shows (an astonishing 23 incarnations to date) – will know that, as well as being super-powered martial arts masters, the Rangers also pilot their own mighty robotic vehicles named Zords, which in turn combine to form the formidable Mega-Zord.

A new poster released via the official ‘Power Rangers’ movie Twitter page gives us our first hint at what the new Zords will look like:

It’s a little hard to identify them due to the deliberate haziness of the image, but we should be looking at a robotic tyrannosaurus, piloted by red ranger Jason; pterodactyl, piloted by pink ranger Kimberly; mastadon, piloted by black ranger Zack; triceratops, piloted by blue ranger Billy; and, most clearly visible, the sabretooth tiger, piloted by yellow ranger Trini.

This teasing glimpse of the Zords strongly indicates that the mighty robots may not have too direct a resemblance of their prehistoric namesakes – but then this almost seems a given, as all the promo material to date implies that the ‘Power Rangers’ movie will have a far more sombre and grounded tone than any existing iteration of the franchise.

Directed by Dean Israelite (‘Project Almanac’), ‘Power Rangers’ casts newcomers Dacre Montgomery, Becky G, Naomi Scott, RJ Cyler and Ludi Lin as the titular quintet, whilst Elizabeth Banks co-stars as their nemesis Rita Repulsa, Bill Hader voices their robot assistant Alpha 5, and Bryan Cranston portrays their all-knowing alien mentor Zordon.

‘Power Rangers’ opens in UK cinemas on 24 March 2017.
