The highly anticipated Predator sequel will be named Skull, producers John Davis and John Fox have officially revealed.

In a new interview with Collider, Davis explained: "It goes back to what made the original Predator movie work. It's the ingenuity of a human being who won't give up, who's able to observe and interpret, basically being able to beat a stronger, more powerful, well-armed force."

Dan Trachtenberg, who previously directed 10 Cloverfield Lane, was hired by 20th Century Fox to be at the helm of the reboot, which was confirmed last year after a leak scuppered his plans for a big reveal. Tractenberg later revealed he'd been working on it "for almost 4 years now" and was not pleased the surprise was ruined.

Davis said that the upcoming fifth instalment was conceived during filming for the last Predator film, 2018’s The Predator.

"Dan [Trachtenberg] came to me with a writer and an idea while we were shooting the movie," Davis explained. "[Paramount Pictures president] Emma Watts was really instrumental here. She said, 'You know what, let's go put this into development now and let's push on this now. Let's go for this now.'

"We couldn't be shooting one movie and prepping another, especially when one was the current-day end of the franchise and the other was the period beginning of the franchise. So it was always done with a lot of secrecy. It just continued to be something that's going to be out there to surprise you."

Many fans predicted the title reveal, as it was well-known that Trachtenberg was working on a film called Skulls. While it hadn’t been confirmed as a part of the Predator franchise, some made the connection given the trophies that Predators collect in previous movies of the series. Davis, who has produced every Predator film so far, had also been confirmed as a producer on the movie.

Davis said he believes Skull will be "as good" as the original Predator: "I feel like the first one was a wonderful, interesting movie and I know what worked about it. I feel like we kind of never got back there again. We ended up in different places. I think this is a worthy complement to the first one. It's going to be as good."

As for what Skull is going to be about, the film’s logline teases that it will focus on "a Comanche woman who goes against gender norms and traditions to become a warrior."

This makes the new instalment the first in the franchise to be led by a female character, which Davis said he "always think is interesting."

The release date for Skull is yet to be announced.
