Ahead of the Premiership final between Saracens and Sale Sharks on Saturday, we pick out five players to watch out for at Twickenham.

There’s three from Saracens and two from Sale Sharks in our list as, on the back of our head-to-heads feature, we single out five stars worth monitoring.

Joe Carpenter

With Steve Borthwick being an interested observer at Twickenham Stadium, there’s the subplot of catching the England head coach’s eye on Saturday.

Carpenter has surely been doing that already this campaign as he has been one of Sale‘s standout players, dominating at the back despite his young age.

The 21-year-old Leeds-born full-back is strong in the air and devastating with ball in hand while crucially adding a calmness in all he does on the field.

Those traits will serve him well as he matures as a player and it wouldn’t surprise us if he had another fine game that ultimately led to a Test call-up.

Alex Lozowski

On that international theme, it is a shame and mystery that England has not seen more of the criminally under-rated Lozowski in the white jersey.

A brief stint at Montpellier obviously took him out of reckoning in 2020-2021, but since his return to Saracens the 29-year-old has shone in midfield.

His partnership with the superb Nick Tompkins is arguably the best in the league and their battle with Manu Tuilagi and Rob du Preez could be vital.

Both Saracens men have impressive gainline success, with Lozowski flourishing alongside the Wales centre, and he’ll hope that continues on Saturday.

Eroni Mawi

Staying with Saracens and our first forward under the spotlight is a player who was probably the major selection call heading into this huge fixture.

Prop Mawi is picked over Mako Vunipola from the off at Twickenham in a big move by Mark McCall, but on form it is hard to argue against his case.

His try-scoring threat has become something of a theme this season off the bench, as both he and Theo Dan have been key impact men for Sarries.

However, he will be no doubt be more concerned with first doing the basics well against Nick Schonert, with any line breaks – and tries – a bonus.

George Ford

Returning to the Sale selection and it is difficult not to look past one of the respective fly-halves on show this weekend as Ford faces Owen Farrell.

Ford was outstanding in Sale’s semi-final win over Leicester Tigers last time out as he orchestrated his former side’s demise with ice in his veins.

Farrell and Saracens will offer a much sterner test, however, and both Ford and playmaking companion Du Preez need to be on top of their games.

Like those above who will be keen to catch Borthwick’s eye ahead of a World Cup, Ford can do likewise although we feel he has already done enough.

Ben Earl

Last but by no means least, Saracens flanker Earl is a player who this week has made no secret of his England disappointments over recent times.

It’s refreshing to see a player being so open to the media about their frustrations rather than hiding their real feelings behind stock, robotic answers.

There is no doubting his talent, he’s just unfortunate to have been behind the likes of Tom and Ben Curry and Lewis Ludlam in the pecking order.

But with Ben currently injured and a Twickenham final as his stage, Earl has a massive opportunity to throw down a marker in such a huge match.
