Watch: Lady Kitty Spencer says she was not ready for the sudden influx of attention she received after the royal wedding

Lady Kitty Spencer has admitted she thought she had picked up someone else's phone after Harry and Meghan's wedding because her Instagram following increased so rapidly.

Lady Spencer, who is one of Prince William and Prince Harry's cousins, went from 37,000 to 500,000 followers on the social network overnight after attending Harry's Windsor wedding.

Speaking to Town & Country Magazine she said: "I woke up the next day and looked at my phone and thought, ‘Whoops, did I take someone else’s by mistake?’

"It was very weird, and a little bit overwhelming."

Model Lady Spencer, 30, is the oldest daughter of Earl Spencer, and the niece of Diana, the late Princess of Wales.

She was born in England but spent much of her life in South Africa, where her mother and sisters still live.

Of her sisters, twins Eliza and Amelia, Lady Spencer said: "We are a bit of a tripod.

"It’s been horrible to be separated this year.

"They are in South Africa, which is only an hour ahead, and with two flights going there a day, you usually have the comforting thought of ‘I could always be there in the morning if I needed to be’.

"It’s been awful to be completely shut off, and thinking, come what may, we can’t be there for each other…"

Amelia shared news of her engagement to personal trainer Greg Mallett, in an interview with Tatler, but while she decides whether to wed in the UK or South Africa, her older sister has kept quiet about her own love life.

She said: "It’s not that I don’t place an importance on love.

"It’s because, for me, love is the most important thing in the world, and I will protect it with all my heart by not making it a topic of discussion.

"You open yourself up to other people having opinions, and it just isn’t relevant to anybody’s life but mine and my family’s."

Lady Spencer is engaged to Michael Lewis, a 62-year-old fashion tycoon who has been married before and has three children.

He is chairman of the Foschini group which has 3,000 stores and in the UK owns Whistles and Phase Eight. Lewis reportedly has a £19m home in London as well as a property in South Africa.

While Lady Spencer might be missing her younger sisters, they suggested in March, after their interview with Tatler, that they are ready to move back to London soon, so the trio may be reunited.

The summer issue of Town & Country is on sale from May 13.
