From Town & Country

A central topic of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s interview with Oprah was Harry’s relationship with his family. When Harry was asked directly about his father and brother, his response was guarded – but he said that after he and Meghan had discussed stepping down as senior members of the Royal Family, Prince Charles stopped taking his calls. And when asked about Prince William, Harry said that the “relationship is space at the moment”.

At the same time, Harry explained that he understood their situation. “My father and my brother, they are trapped. They don’t get to leave. And I have huge compassion for that.” He described the constant pressure to put one’s best face forward. “That’s a part of the job,” Harry said. “It’s a part of the role. That’s what’s expected, no matter who you are in the family, no matter what’s going on in your personal life, no matter what’s just happened.” And while he had hoped his father and brother would “learn from history”, and not repeat with Meghan what had happened with Princess Diana, he did not feel that was the case.

However, Harry seems hopeful this will change in the future. Of his father, he said: “There’s a lot of hurt that happened. And I will continue to make it one of my priorities to try and heal that relationship.” For his brother, he put it more simply: “Time heals all things.”
