Prince Philip has been transferred via ambulance from London's King Edward VII Hospital to St Bartholomew’s Hospital in the city this afternoon. St Bartholomew's is a centre for excellence in cardiac conditions.

Buckingham Palace confirmed that the decision had been made to move the 99-year-old so that doctors could continue to treat him for an infection, as well as undertaking testing and observation for a pre-existing heart condition. The Palace says the Duke of Edinburgh "remains comfortable and is responding to treatment" but will remain in hospital until "at least the end of the week."

The senior royal was first admitted to hospital on 17 February as a "precautionary measure" after feeling unwell. On the advice of his doctor, Prince Philip was taken by car to King Edward VII Hospital and it later emerged that he was being treated for an infection. The Palace said at the time that "it was not an emergency admission and the illness is not COVID related."

Earlier this afternoon, press located outside the hospital raised the alarm about a patient being moved out of the hospital and into an ambulance. Umbrellas were used to shield vision of the patient, which drew attention and speculation that it was the Duke of Edinburgh. Buckingham Palace went on to confirm his relocation shortly afterwards.

The Queen's husband retired from royal duties in the autumn of 2017, and has been largely based on the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk ever since. However, due to the coronavirus pandemic and the resulting lockdowns, the royal relocated to Windsor Castle so he could shield along with his wife, Queen Elizabeth.

In January, both Prince Philip and the Queen underwent COVID-19 vaccinations, with their age giving both priority. The vaccines were administered by a household doctor at Windsor Castle.

Here's wishing the Duke of Edinburgh a speedy recovery!
