Prince’s Purple Rain Costumes Fetch Almost $200,000 At Auction

Clothing worn by late music legend Prince in his 1984 movie ‘Purple Rain’ has been auctioned in California for far higher than expected.

The Guardian report that the ruffled white shirt worn during the iconic performance of the title track went for almost $100,000 - a whopping 32 times its asking price of $3,000-$5,000.

On top of this, a white silk shirt and black and white blazer worn in the movie fetched $96,000.

The items had already been scheduled to go up for auction before Prince’s death earlier this year - but inevitably his demise has boosted interest in such memorabilia.

Joe Maddalena, founder of auctioneers Profiles in History, said, “It just happened to be one of those coincidences that unfortunately he passed away.

“Probably the signature thing he is known for is Purple Rain. It’s what made his career. It’s probably what he’ll be remembered for always.

“To have an important piece like this is pretty astonishing and an amazing opportunity.”

The semi-autobiographical drama from director Albert Magnoli cast Prince as The Kid, an up-an-coming musical star struggling to balance his increasing success with a troubled personal life.

It proved a big box office success, making over $80 million worldwide at the box office off a $7.2 million budget, whilst the accompanying album has sold over 22 million copies, making it the sixth biggest-selling movie soundtrack ever.

Other Prince items sold at the auction include a shirt from the ‘Purple Rain’ tour, boots from the ‘Lovesexy’ tour and a necklace worn in the ‘Diamonds and Pearls’ video, which fetched almost $45,000 put together.
