Protesters Gatecrash Meryl Streep Film Premiere

The premiere of the new Meryl Streep film ‘Suffragette’ was gatecrashed by a group opposing government funding cuts for victims of domestic violence.

The protesters, from a group called Sisters Uncut, bypassed security to lie across the red carpet and release smoke bombs.

Talking to BBC London, Janelle Brown of Sisters Uncut said: “We came to the ‘Suffragette’ premiere today because the struggle is definitely not over. Dead women can’t vote.“

"Two women each week are killed in Britain because of domestic violence. Austerity reduces women’s access to legal aid and support services. The most drastic cuts were to specialist services.

"We’re a direct action group and we know that was the tactic the suffragettes used too.”

Attendees of the event said the protest caused “chaos”, although in some photos the red carpet formalities appeared to continue around the protestors.

The choice of film to protest was significant - ‘Suffragette’ is the story of the early woman’s suffrage movement and stars Streep (as British suffragette leader Emmeline Pankhurst), Carey Mulligan and Helena Bonham-Carter.
