A group of protestors dressed up as sausages crashed the annual Australian TV and movie awards event, the Aactas on Wednesday.

Around 15 people were involved in the incident, organised by the group Women in Film and Television in protest over the disparity in women’s roles in the media.

Chanting the slogan ‘stop the sausage party’, the protestors lay on the red carpet, before being ejected by security.

But not, however, before being recorded on video, and then shared liberally on social media.

Sophie Mathisen, the protest organiser, told the Guardian Australia: “Aacta purports to be a celebration of Australia screen excellence, and at the moment it’s a celebration of a very, very narrow part of the industry.

“There are a huge number of women that are working outside of the system that don’t even get a look-in.

“I don’t understand why there isn’t a gender equity or diversity policy in existence. There are strong statistics to prove that there is institutionalised bias in the system, and the fact that it is not addressed head-on means we are invested in the status quo.”

Stats produced by Deakin University in Victoria showed that, of the 334 producers who worked on movies which were submitted to the Aacta Awards between 2006 and 2015, a total of 126 (37%) were women.

Also, of the 218 men, 89 did not work with a single woman in the roles of producer, director or writer.
