Oh dough! Prue Leith ruins Great British Bake Off final by revealing winner

The Great British Bake Off final is one of the most hotly-anticipated TV events of the year.

But some were treated to a showstopper far too early as poor Prue Leith left fans deflated after accidentally revealing the winner – but, don’t worry, we haven’t so you can read on without finding out.

The 77-year-old show judge took to Twitter to comment on the final earlier today, admitting it had been “so emotional”, but unfortunately wrote the name of the person who will be crowned the winner on Tuesday night’s show – almost 12 hours before its 8pm kick-off time.

She wrote “No one told me judging a #gbbo final would be so emotional. I wanted them all to win. Bravo (sic)”, and then the name of the winner appeared.

Yahoo Celebrity is choosing not to name the triumphant baker in question to ensure the finale is not spoiled for readers.

Prue later expressed regret after her mishap, blaming the six-hour time difference in Bhutan.

She said: “I’m in Bhutan. The time difference is massive. I thought that they got it six hours ago. I’m in too much of a state to talk about it. I f***ed up.”

She also tweeted: “I am so sorry to the fans of the show for my mistake this morning, I am in a different time zone and mortified by my error (sic)”

Following the gaffe, some Bake Off fans were up in arms at finding out who has won before the show has aired on Channel 4.

One wrote: “Prue Leith has just ruined #GBBO for everyone, which somehow feels very English. (sic)”

Another posted: “Prue Leith man what a joke thought I was safe on twitter until later (sic)”.

One wrote: “No need to watch it now. (sic)”

The show has enjoyed a successful year on Channel 4.

Prue deleted the tweet as soon as she realised.

Another tweet on her account reads: “It’s the #GBBO final! Who will win? Thrilled to say Paul, Noel Sandi & I will all be back! Do you want to join us? (sic)”

The finale on Tuesday night pits marketer Steven Carter-Bailey against health and safety inspector Kate Lyon and former Army officer Sophie Faldo.

Prue announced that she would be returning to the show next year, along with Paul Hollywood, Noel Fielding and Sandi Toksvig.

She wrote: “Thrilled to say Paul, Noel, Sandi and I will all be back!”

Prue replaced Mary Berry as a judge on the show alongside Paul Hollywood after the programme moved from the BBC to Channel 4 for the current series.

Earlier this month, Prue admitted she wasn’t sure if she would be asked back for a second series.

She said: “I’m still hoping Channel 4 will ask me back for the second series. They’ve asked me about timings and schedules but I’ve not seen or heard anything about a contract. It could all change, like The X Factor.”

The Great British Bake Off final airs Tuesday night at 8pm on Channel 4.
