Her Majesty the Queen has shared a private photograph of herself and the late Duke of Edinburgh with the public, ahead of Prince Philip's funeral today (17 April).

The beautiful photo was posted on the royal family's official @RoyalFamily Instagram account on Friday (16 April) evening, as the Queen expressed her gratitude for the many messages of condolence she has received from around the world since her husband passed away on 9 April.

In the photo, the Queen and Prince Philip look happy and relaxed as they beam at the camera while sitting down in the grass and enjoying the sunshine. The snap was taken by Sophie, the Countess of Wessex, at the top of the Coyles of Muick in Scotland back in 2003.

The accompanying caption reads: "Her Majesty and the Royal Family are grateful for all the messages of condolence from around the world and have been touched to see and hear so many people sharing fond memories of The Duke, in celebration of his life."

This is the latest in a series of private and previously unseen photographs that have been shared by members of the royal family in the last few days.

On Wednesday (14 April), the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge paid tribute to Prince Philip by posting two photographs of him with his great-grandchildren on their own official Instagram account.

This included a photograph taken by Kate herself of the Queen and Prince Philip surrounded by seven of their great-grandchildren at Balmoral back in 2018.

Prince Philip's funeral is taking place at 3pm this afternoon at St George's Chapel in Windsor.
