Director John Krasinski has officially announced that his horror sequel A Quiet Place 2 has begun filming in New York state.

The filmmaker took to Twitter to post an image of the clapperboard for the first scene of the movie, which will be the follow-up to his surprise 2018 genre hit.

A Quiet Place proved to be a massive box office success, earning $341m (£272m) at the global box office, from a budget of just $17m (£14m).

Emily Blunt, Millicent Simmonds and Noah Jupe will reprise their roles as members of the central Abbott family.

Cillian Murphy and Brian Tyree Henry, meanwhile, have joined the cast for this follow-up, with Krasinski returning behind the camera, but not in front of it.

Little is known about the plot of the sequel, but it will return to the post-apocalyptic world of the first film, in which the remaining human beings must maintain silence to avoid the threat of noise-sensitive monsters.

If new star Brian Tyree Henry is to be believed, the origin story of those monsters will be a big part of the new film, which is being written by Krasinski.

While Krasinski officially announced the beginning of filming today, the cast and crew have been spotted in New York throughout the last week.

Staff at Buffalo Library in Akron, NY, were even able to snap a picture of Krasinski and Blunt, which they shared on social media.

As well as sweeping the box office, A Quiet Place was acclaimed by critics, with a 95% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

It was also a rare example of a horror film that proved to be an awards season player, with the movie nominated at the Oscars, BAFTAs and Golden Globes.

Emily Blunt, meanwhile, won the Screen Actors Guild award for Best Supporting Actress.
