Reasons To Be Optimistic About Indiana Jones 5

Disney has confirmed that a new ‘Indiana Jones’ adventure is on the way in 2019, with Steven Spielberg set to direct and Harrison Ford returning to the title role.

The announcement was met with the kind of indifference and pessimism that meets most major movie announcements online, so we wanted to shine a spotlight on some of the reasons to get excited about this new adventure.

Spielberg Is Still Spielberg

He directed 'Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skulls’ - the main reason people are approaching this new film with some trepidation - but those people are forgetting one important thing: it’s Steven flippin’ Spielberg!

He’s a bona fide living Hollywood legend who is still producing the goods. Sure, he hasn’t hit his 80s height for a while, but he’s still a good man to have in charge of any movie.

The Ford Awakens

'Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ proved last year that given the right material (or, if you’re cynical, the right truck-load of cash) Harrison Ford still has that undeniable screen presence and that twinkle in his eye.

If Ford can bring that to the role of Han Solo (below, with Chewbacca) - a character he famously doesn’t like - then he’s certainly going to try his best when he dons the fedora and cracks the whip as a character he adores.

A Lucas-Free Zone (For Now)

Disney’s statement confirming the new film’s production makes no mention of George Lucas - who had a great deal of input in the slapdash story of 'Kingdom of the Crystal Skull’.

While he wasn’t solely to blame for that film’s failings, comparisons to his 'Star Wars’ prequel trilogy certainly didn’t help his case. If Lucas is as far removed as he was from JJ Abrams’ 'The Force Awakens’ - that’s only a good thing.

Lessons Will Have Been Learned

There’s no way industry legends like Spielberg, Ford and producers Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall (and Disney) will approach a new 'Indiana Jones’ without acknowledging the widespread criticism of 'KotCS’.

If they also address the concerns people had (with the aliens, CGI and Shia LaBeouf in particular) then the new film is instantly in a good position to succeed.

We’ve got a long wait before we find out just how good 'Indy 5’ will be. The film is set for release on 19 July 2019.
