Legally Blonde 3 was confirmed to be happening all the way back in 2018, but three years on and we've seen very little progress, and it seems highly unlikely that May 2022 release date they announced is happening.
Star and producer Reese Witherspoon has given fans an update on the third entry in the series, telling Variety on the red carpet for Sing 2 that: "We are just working on a script right now and when we have a script then we can make a movie."
As for when that script will be ready, Witherspoon says it's best that you ask Mindy Kaling, who is writing it.
"I love the franchise so much," Kaling said earlier this year. "I love Elle Woods as a character and when Reese asked me to write it I was like, 'Absolutely!'". She also teased that we can expect a lot of fan-favourite returns for the latest instalment, but otherwise we've had no updates from her on the script's progress since.
Luke Wilson has also gone on record to state that he'd love to return, saying how much he appreciated the fan investment in the character of Elle Woods, where he had groups of young people coming up to him asking questions about her.
"They'd ask where she was and what she was doing and was she as great as she seemed... It's one thing to make a movie people like, it's another thing to make a movie that does well, but to have one that gets legs because of how people feel about it, that is a great feeling."
To keep eager fans happy though while they wait for the third movie, Witherspoon did reveal details about the original ending of the first movie, which would have focused on her romantic relationship over her professional success as a lawyer.
Legally Blonde was due to be released May 2022, but a delayed release date has yet to be announced.
