Reeva Steenkamp's mother 'disturbed' by Pistorius documentary trailer

Reeva Steenkamp's mother has said she was “disturbed” by a BBC trailer for a documentary about Oscar Pistorious after it failed to mention her daughter’s name.

The trailer for the documentary, The Trials of Oscar Pistorius, about the paralympian’s life and court case was pulled by the BBC on Tuesday afternoon following a backlash.

June Steenkamp claims she has no recollection of being contacted to participate in the documentary and said her daughter only features in the trailer as “the deceased”.

Speaking to ITV’s This Morning programme, Mrs Steenkamp said: “I am just disbturbed by no one saying anything, that she was the person who died.

“I've got my foundation now and have been working hard at saving women from gender-based violence. It seems tragic that they just used her as the deceased again.”

She added: “'I want to know why they don’t speak about Reeva and why they don’t see her as the wonderful person that she was.”

Oscar Pistorius was jailed for 15 years after being found guilty for shooting Reeva dead on Valentine's Day in 2013.

In 2018 he had his conviction upheld by South Africa’s High Court and continues to serve his sentence.

The new documentary, produced by ESPN, will be available on iPlayer from November 7.

After removing the trailer, the BBC said: “We regret that the original trail did not refer to Reeva Steenkamp directly.

“We are aware of the upset it has caused, which was never the intention. We have removed the trail and it will be replaced by something more representative of the series, which examines in detail a number of complex issues connected to her murder.”
