Yahoo Movies Rei Kawakubo Shows What She Can Do With Black Leather for Comme des Garçons Fall 2024
Season after season, Comme des Garçons can be relied upon for fantastically shaped, voluminous and vibrant ready-to-wear pieces that could easily pass for haute couture. Whether she's using neon Andy Warhol-like florals or confetti-esque sequined fabrics, Rei Kawakubo has an unmatched ability to spark a sense of unrestrained joy.
But she also has a knack for subverting expectations. And after last season's doiley-covered, asymmetrical hot-pink sets and fluffy, cotton candy-like capes, the designer seems to have had a change in heart for Fall 2024. Though still just as playful and imaginative as seasons past, the latest collection sees Kawakubo forego bright hues for an edgier and darker Comme des Garçons, focusing on leather to craft her ideas.
Instead of lightweight materials like tafetta and tulle, Kawakubo uses endless amounts of leather (or leather-like materials) to create billowing ballgowns, flared trousers and even a pannier-style skirt wrapped up in an oversized leather bow. The only colors displayed throughout the presentation are washed greys to contrast against the jet-black leather, and faded moss green that serves as the lining for multiple looks.
