Renée Zellweger says she overheard people on the tube calling her 'stupid' for having 'cosmetic surgery'

Renée Zellweger has continued to speak about the 'international humiliation' she suffered after it was claimed that she'd had cosmetic surgery.

Last week, in an interview with Vulture, she said that the rumours, which emerged in 2014, 'made her sad'.

“I don’t look at beauty in that way. And I don’t think of myself in that way. I like my weird quirkiness, my off-kilter mix of things,” she added.

Now, in a new interview on SiriusXM, she has said she suffered an additional indignity while on the Tube in London, as a man she was sitting next to began talking about her to the two women he was sitting with.

“They were talking about Hollywood and how Hollywood ladies are so silly, especially that Renée Zellweger,” she told host Jess Cagle.

“'How could she do that? Why would she go and have surgery on her face like we wouldn’t know? She doesn’t look like herself, and you can’t just do that where you go and don’t look like yourself, ‘cause we expect you to look like yourself',” she went on.

“And I thought, ‘Wow, that’s interesting. Anyway, here’s my stop,’ ” Zellweger went on.

“So I get up and I stand next to the door waiting for it to open and the man is still talking about how stupid I am. And he looked up and he said, ‘Oh God, you’re not — you are! Oh my God, but you look just like yourself!’ And I said, ‘Yeah, it’s funny how that works, isn’t it?’

“It’s only momentarily where you go, ‘Jeez, wow, that’s pretty painful.’ But I don’t live in that. It just visits my life here and there and I'm not really privy on that stuff until someone sends it to me. I don’t seek it out.

“And I’m busy! You know, I have dogs and they have to have shots and they need pills twice a day. There’s a lot, you know. I have other things to do.”

At the time, Zellweger released a statement saying that she was 'glad folks think I look different', and branded the chatter around her appearance 'silly'.

The actress is currently doing the rounds promoting her new movie Judy, a biopic of the screen icon Judy Garland, for which she's receiving significant awards buzz.

The movie, also starring Jessie Buckley, Rufus Sewell and Michael Gambon, arrives in the UK on 4 October.
