Just hours before the first day of training camp, the New York Giants have lost rookie cornerback Sam Beal to a shoulder injury, ESPN’s Dianna Russini reported Wednesday.

The Giants took Beal in the supplemental draft
The Giants gave up a third-round pick to take Beal in this year’s supplemental draft. The Western Michigan product was thought to be a potential early-round pick in next year’s NFL draft, but he was ruled academically ineligible for the 2018 season and declared for the supplemental draft in early June.
Beal, 21, likely would have been an immediate contributor. From Yahoo Sports’ Terez Paylor:
The addition of Beal brings a young, talented body to the position, someone whose coverage ability and willingness to fight for the ball in the air could make him an immediate contributor. Beal could have been a second- or first-round pick had he remained eligible for the 2019 draft, sources around the league told Yahoo Sports. So the feeling here is that the Giants’ decision to surrender a 2019 third-rounder for a big corner (6-foot, 185 pounds) who fits their physical prerequisites for the position is a sound gamble.
Beal had 22 tackles, two interceptions and a forced fumble in his final year at Western Michigan
The Giants need cornerback help again
Now that Beal is out of the picture for the upcoming season, the Giants are scrambling for secondary help. The current starters, Eli Apple and Janoris Jenkins, are in a bit of tumult. Apple, a first-round pick in 2016, has endured two difficult years and was called “a cancer” by safety Landon Collins for his behavior off the field last season. Jenkins’ older brother, William, was charged with aggravated manslaughter, and the victim’s body was found in Jenkins’ yard.
