Yahoo Movies Resident Evil star Tom Hopper didn't want to know character's future
The Umbrella Academy's Tom Hopper purposefully avoided exploring the later Resident Evil video games so he wouldn't learn about his character Albert Wesker's future.
Sitting down for an exclusive chat with Digital Spy about the new zombie horror Welcome to Raccoon City, which is adapted from that iconic series, Hopper said revisiting the games "was part" of his preparation at the request of director Johannes Roberts.
"I didn't know that was going to be part of the research. When I had the meeting with Johannes and we talked about me doing the movie, I said, 'What can I do to really enhance the whole thing, what would you want me to do?'" he recalled.

"And he was like, 'Go back and play the games, I want you to play them, understand who Wesker is and forget about that and play this version of Wesker'."
He continued: "We were trying to move away from the sunglasses and the spiky hair and all that, and get the human behind him."

Hopper, who Game of Thrones lovers will recognise as the ill-fated Dickon Tarly, went on to reference his interest in Wesker's moral compass.
"What was really important for me to understand was his morality and why he does what he does, try and get the mythology and the origin story of who Wesker really is. I didn't pay so much attention to the [games] later on because I don't want to know who he becomes, I don't want to know that supervillain element of him," he said.
"I wanted to know who he was at ground level when he was part of a team, when he was friends with those guys and why he did what he did, and then create my own version of it but still trying to honour that source material."
Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City is out now in US cinemas, while UK fans can watch it from December 3.
