Restaurant tried to shame a teen after he paid for friends' meals in quarters. Instead, it inspired more acts of kindness.

A Lynchburg, Va., restaurant is under fire after their attempt at a joke landed flat.

In a now-deleted Facebook post, Beer 88 displayed a photo of a pile of quarters and wrote, “How NOT to pay at a restaurant,” and added hashtags that read “we are beer 88 not a coinstar,” and “no home training.”

The person who paid the bill was a 17-year-old boy, who covered the entire amount, $45, and left a $10 tip, which is a 22 percent tip.

Cohen Nautly, the aforementioned teen, was using the tips that he earned as a server at Country Kitchen to treat his friends to a meal.

Plenty of commenters of the original post stood up for Nautly. Beer 88 responded, according to WSET, with comments like, “Welcome to social media” and “Obviously the SARCASM and HUMOR of this post is lost on most of y’all.”

Beer 88 has since removed their entire page from Facebook after posting this statement, according to WSET: “In response to our earlier post, it was posted as a joke, intended as a joke and should be taken as a joke. It was posted as a light-hearted way of saying that something like this can be annoying to people that work in the restaurant/retail industry. In no way did we publicly shame ANYONE for paying OR tipping. We try to keep our page funny and relatable. And had no idea that this would be offensive to anyone.”

Yao Liu, the owner of Beer 88, says she has received threats since the post went up and that she has apologized.

Naulty isn’t letting the post get him down. “I love paying for people’s meals even if I have to scrape together my last quarters to do so. This whole thing made me realize how much I love doing this and why…” Naulty wrote on his Facebook page called “The Quarter Boy.”

Now he plans to treat someone “once a week” to a free meal, and to post the videos so that his followers can see “how big a change just a little ‘change’ can make.”
