Rhys Ifans Admits Amazing Spider-Man Disappointments

As comic book movie fans prepare themselves for the third big screen incarnation of Spider-Man, a key actor from the last reboot of the character says the franchise is in need of - watch out, rude words coming up now - a “kick up the arse.”

These comments come from Rhys Ifans, who portrayed central villain Dr Curt Connors/the Lizard opposite debutante Spidey actor Andrew Garfield in 2012′s ‘The Amazing Spider-Man.’

Speaking to Total Film magazine (quotes via Comic Book Movie), the Welsh actor’s reflections on working on Marc Webb’s superhero reboot do not paint the rosiest picture.

“Anthropologically, it was fascinating. If I was an anthropologist, it would have been very valuable… As an actor, it was a lesson.

"As I got into it, I remember looking into The Lizard and there was one of the comics where Dr. Curt Connors goes home, and he’s messing about with his Lizard-ness. He takes his work home with him, and he eats his kids.

"I remember thinking at the time, ‘That’s the film I want to be in.’ Not necessarily Dr. Curt Connors eating his kids, but in terms of exploration, in terms of what this film could be about, that was the film. And of course, it could never be that.

“Whatever you’re told and promised at the beginning of something, when it comes to franchises like that, it’s never ever going to be what ends up on screen.”

On the subject of the upcoming Sony/Marvel collaboration, Ifans insists he has “no opinion” - but stresses, “I hope that when they reboot, there will be more emphasis on the 'boot’ than the ’re’, because it needs a kick up the arse.“

Blunt words - but a sentiment that many would share nonetheless.

Jon Watts will direct Tom Holland as the new Spider-Man in an as-yet untitled new film co-produced by Marvel and Sony, due in July 2017.

Before this, Holland’s Spidey will make his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in ‘Captain America: Civil War,’ hitting UK cinemas on 29 April 2016.
