Why Rick Moranis Turned Down A Cameo In The Ghostbusters Reboot

The production of Paul Feig’s ‘Ghostbusters’ reboot has brought with it news of cameo roles from many of the key players from the 1985 original and its 1989 sequel.

One by one, Dan Ayrkoyd, Bill Murray, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver and Annie Potts were confirmed to be making an appearance - but one key figure whose name has not come up is Rick Moranis.

Addressing the matter, the now-reclusive comedy star (who hasn’t been in a live action movie since 1997) has given a rare interview to The Hollywood Reporter, confirming that he was asked to appear in the new ‘Ghostbusters’ - but said no.

“I wish them well. I hope it’s terrific. But it just makes no sense to me. Why would I do just one day of shooting on something I did 30 years ago?“

Moranis also refuted the oft-cited claim that he is retired as an actor. His withdrawal from the screen in 1997 was down to the untimely death of his wife, and in the 18 years since Moranis has been a full-time stay at home father.

However, the now 63 year old actor (whose other hits include ‘Little Shop of Horrors,’ ‘Spaceballs,’ ‘The Flinstones’ and the ‘Honey I shrunk the Kids’ series) says he is open to new work if it’s something that really takes his fancy.

“I took a break, which turned into a longer break. But I’m interested in anything that I would find interesting.

“I still get the occasional query about a film or television role, and as soon as one comes along that piques my interest, I’ll probably do it. [But Ghostbusters] didn’t appeal to me.”

Looking back on his blockbuster years, Moranis reflects, “I was working with really interesting people, wonderful people. I went from that to being at home with a couple of little kids, which is a very different lifestyle.

“But it was important to me. I have absolutely no regrets whatsoever. My life is wonderful.“

The Rick Moranis-free ‘Ghostbusters’ reboot is set to open on 15 July 2016.
