Ridley Scott: I'll never ever make a superhero film

Marvel and (to a degree) DC have had a number of lucrative superhero movies hit cinemas over the years.

With the enormous pressure not only to get casting right and build a thrilling movie for the fans, finding the right directors is also key. However, one veteran that won’t be lending his talents to the genre is Ridely Scott.

In a recent interview with Digital Spy, the ‘Alien’ director didn’t hold back when it came to expressing his disdain for superhero films and how sees some of his past films have been tackled in comicbook-y way.

Scott revealed that he had actually been offered the chance to direct several superhero and comicbook stories but turned them down without hesitation.

“Superhero movies are not my kind of thing – that’s why I’ve never really done one. [I’ve been asked] several times, but I can’t believe in the thin, gossamer tight-rope of the non-reality of the situation of the superhero. I’ve done that kind of movie – Blade Runner really is a comic strip when you think about it, it’s a dark story told in an unreal world. You could almost put Batman or Superman in that world, that atmosphere, except I’d have a f**king good story, as opposed to no story!”

Well, that sums up Sir Ridley’s stance on that. Although it’s interesting he compares ‘Blade Runner’ to the genre he’s not keen on, even though he’s currently on board producing ‘Blade Runner 2049’.

Ridley Scott’s follow-up to ‘Prometheus’ promises to be much more in keeping with the classic ‘Alien’ universe. Back in 2014, Scott was vocal about just how difficult he believed comicbook stories were to translate to the big screen, describing the current output from Hollywood void of admiration, saying “cinemas mainly is pretty bad.” He also expressed a general concern for the industry he’s been working in for five decades, believing it’s in decline.

Following on from a return to form for the experienced director with 2015’s acclaimed ‘The Martian’, at present Scott’s now hard at work on ‘Alien: Covenant’, the sequel to 2012’s somewhat disappointing ‘Prometheus’.

With a number of his recent projects falling short at the box office or failing to impress audiences and critics, it’s perhaps a little hypocritical of him to suggest the rest of the film industry is in a dire state of affairs. That said, if he can give us with a strong horror-slasher in the style of his 1979 classic ‘Alien’, then his comeback will well and truly be underway.
