Riz Ahmed's family not bothered by his first-ever Oscar nomination

Riz Ahmed’s family weren't bothered by his first-ever Oscar nomination.

Thanks to his role in Sound of Metal, the British-Pakistani actor is nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role at the upcoming 2021 Academy Awards alongside the likes of the late Chadwick Boseman, Anthony Hopkins, Gary Oldman, and Steven Yeun.

Despite his awe at landing an Oscar nod, and becoming the first Muslim Best Actor nominee in the prestigious prizegiving's history, Ahmed confessed that some of his family members were nonplussed by his big news.

"My cousin Adnan legit didn't know what the Oscars were. (He said) 'Why all the gas? I won best client engagement award for the financial quarter,'" he wrote on Twitter, according to Variety.

And another of his cousins also echoed the sentiment that Ahmed's history-making nomination was old news.

"(He told me) 'Na, it's not as big as that, cos he didn't win anything. It's more like getting an email from your boss.' Thanks, boss (sic)," the 38-year-old quipped.

Sound of Metal, which is also nominated for Best Picture at the ceremony on 25 April, follows heavy metal drummer Ruben as his life falls apart when he begins to lose his hearing.

The drama is now available to watch on Amazon Prime Video.
