Rob Lowe reveals St. Elmo's Fire sequel is in 'very early stages'

Rob Lowe has revealed a sequel to his 1985 coming-of-age film St. Elmo's Fire is in the "very early stages".

Almost 40 years ago, The West Wing actor starred alongside Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe, Andrew McCarthy, Demi Moore, Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy and Andie MacDowell in Joel Schumacher's film.

Thanks to McCarthy's recent feature documentary Brats, about the group of young actors known as the Brat Pack, there has been renewed speculation about a potential sequel to the cult classic.

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Lowe, 60, revealed that he has been having discussions about a follow-up.

"We've met with the studio and I have been talking about doing it for about four months," he shared. "But it's very, very, very, very, very early stages, so we will see."

He added that the documentary, which was released in June, only "added to the excitement around it".

The film, which revolved the university hangout spot St. Elmo's Bar, followed a group of recent graduates of Washington, D.C.'s Georgetown University as they adjusted to adult life.

Deadline reported in June that Sony executives were exploring the possibility of making a new version of the film with the original cast members. According to the outlet, there is currently no script.

The Brat Pack was a nickname given to a group of young actors who frequently appeared together in teen-oriented coming-of-age films in the '80s. Outside of the St. Elmo's Fire cast, members also included Anthony Michael Hall and Molly Ringwald.
