With over a decade of experience working in the MCU, Robert Downey Jr has some ambitious plans for Sherlock Holmes.
He'll portray the iconic detective on the big screen for a third time in the near future – once again opposite Jude Law's John Watson – but Robert also hopes to slingshot his character into what he's calling a "mystery-verse".
In conversation at the Fast Company Innovation Festival this week, the actor spoke about his vision alongside wife and producer Susan Downey.
"At this point, we really feel that there is not a mystery-verse built out anywhere, and [Arthur] Conan Doyle is the definitive voice in that arena, I think, to this day," he shared.
"So to me, why do a third movie if you're not going to be able to spin off into some real gems of diversity and other times and elements?"
Susan went on to elaborate: "We think there's an opportunity to build it out more. Spin-off characters from a third movie, to see what's going on in the television landscape, to see what Warner Media is starting to build out, things with HBO and HBO Max."
Referencing her husband's (and her own) time under the "tutelage" of Marvel Studios, she described it as "invaluable" and "like a master class".
"What I saw was very humble beginnings, very uncertain outcomes, a lot of creative risk-taking, but there was also an algorithm to the potential," Robert noted.
