Yahoo Movies Robert Pattinson: I Don’t Get Offered Blockbusters (Exclusive)
As a casual observer, you would be forgiven for thinking that Robert Pattinson has deliberately chosen challenging roles to dissociate himself from his teen-friendly origins.
Despite a string of appearances in more adult roles during and after his ‘Twilight’ days, Pattinson says his career choices are not part of a grand scheme to shake off his teen fans, regardless of the way it looks.
“I genuinely choose [my roles], because that’s the only jobs I get [offered],” explains Pattinson in our interview for his new film ‘The Rover’ above.
In it he plays Rey, a mentally challenged drifter who gets kidnapped by Guy Pearce’s character in the Australian outback. It’s a long way from his role as Edward Cullen, the lovestruck vampire in the all-conquering ‘Twilight’ movies.
“Pretty much, the jobs I did after ‘Twilight’ are just the jobs I got offered,” he reiterates.
“I just happened to get outré jobs.”

Pattinson has so far failed to have a major hit movie since the ‘Twilight’ films finished in 2012. He’s worked with some major talent including David Cronenberg (‘Cosmopolis’) and Werner Herzog (‘Queen of the Desert’) but he’s suffered a series of box-office flops. Only 2011’s ‘Water For Elephants’ made any serious money, taking around £70m worldwide.
Pattinson has always been uncomfortable with the level of fame the ‘Twilight’ saga brought him, telling In Touch Weekly: “’Twilight’ has its own parallel world, its own fan culture that has been forming on the net since day one. And in an intense way that has never existed before.
"Sometimes I ask myself what these masses of people do the whole day. They sit in front of their computers and comment on anything having even remotely to do with ‘Twilight’."
‘The Rover’ sees him team up with acclaimed Australian director David Michôd (‘Animal Kingdom’) and Guy Pearce and he puts in an astonishing performance.
