Robert Rodriguez has signed on to rewrite and direct a live-action “Jonny Quest” movie for Warner Bros., an individual familiar with the project has told TheWrap.

Dan Lin (“Suicide Squad”) of Lin Pictures and Adrian Askarieh (“Hitman: Agent 47”) of Prime Universe are producing the family-friendly adventure movie about the boy hero. Rodriguez and Terry Rossio will rewrite the screenplay, the most recent draft of which was written by Dan Mazeau.

The “Jonny Quest” movie will pair the young hero with a bodyguard. Zac Efron and Dwayne Johnson were previously eyed to star when Peter Segal was in line to direct.

The film will be based on the popular Hanna-Barbera animated series created by Doug Wildey in the mid-1960s. Warner Bros. executives Andy Fischel and Nik Mavinkurve will oversee the project for the studio.

Rodriguez has plenty of experience creating family-friendly entertainment, having directed the hit “Spy Kids” franchise. He’s represented by WME, while Rossio is repped by CAA.
