Rogue One helps Disney to record-breaking $7 billion in ticket sales for 2016

Disney has made a record-breaking $7 billion (£5.6 billion) in ticket sales over 2016, thanks to a final multi-million dollar push from the latest Star Wars movie, ‘Rogue One’.

The previous industry record for ticket sales in a year was set last year by Universal, which made $6.9 billion over the course of 2015.

Not only that, but Disney has notched up the top four grossing films of the year too.

There was ‘Captain America: Civil War’ with $1.15 billion, ‘Finding Dory’ from Pixar with $1.03 billion, ‘Zootopia’ with $1.02 billion and its live-action remake of ‘The Jungle Book’ with $967 million.

And that’s not to mention the sterling work from ‘Doctor Strange’ ($652.9 million), ‘Moana’ with £282 million so far, and, of course, ‘Rogue One’, which has thus far coined in $290 million after just one weekend on release.

“This historic achievement is possible because all of our film studios are bringing their absolute best to the table, telling great stories of all kinds that resonate with audiences across borders, gender, and generations,” said Alan Horn, Disney Studios’ chairman said in a statement.

“These films work because each one has not only something for everyone, but everything for someone. It’s our honor to be able to create these experiences for audiences, and we’re thankful to them for continuing to come out to the theater with us.”

And while it’s been a bumper year, it’s not been without its occasional hiccups, notably ‘Alice Through The Looking Glass’, which made just shy of $300 million (not far of what it likely cost to make and promote), compared to its predecessor ‘Alice In Wonderland’, which made over $1 billion in 2010.
