Roland Emmerich Lines Up New Sci-Fi Movie, Moonfall

His latest movie ‘Independence Day: Resurgence’ may have only just touched down in cinemas, but filmmaker Roland Emmerich has already got his next project lined up.

Deadline report that the seasoned blockbuster director has just closed a deal with Universal for his next picture, ‘Moonfall.’ The studio reportedly paid a seven-figure sum for the spec script by Emmerich, Harald Kloser and Spencer Cohen.

Reportedly the film will centre on “an unlikely band of misfits who must unite to save humanity when the moon falls out of orbit and hurtles towards earth.”

Sounds like fairly standard territory for the master of disaster, whose other epic visions of destruction include 1998′s ‘Godzilla,’ ‘The Day After Tomorrow,’ ‘2012,’ and of course the original ‘Independence Day.’

It’s unclear what this would mean for Emmerich’s planned reboot trilogy of his earlier hit ‘Stargate’ - although when discussing this recently, the director stressed, “It took very long for ‘Independence Day [Resurgence],’ so [Stargate] will probably also take equally long.”

Described as a mix of ‘2012′ and Spielberg’s ‘Close Encounters of the Third Kind,’ ‘Moonfall’ will reportedly be fast-tracked into production at Universal, although no prospective release dates or casting have yet been announced.
