Romeo and Juliet is getting a unique modern-day remake with Diego Tinoco, star of the Netflix series On My Block. He'll be joined by Siddiq Saunderson, who is best known for his role in Hulu's Wu-Tang: An American Saga.
Titled R#J, the new movie from director Carey Williams is described as a mashup of Shakespearean language for the social media generation.
Set in the Louisiana area, the story takes place through the mobile phones of star-crossed lovers Romeo and Juliet.
Tinoco will play the role of Tybalt, Juliet's short-tempered first cousin and Romeo's rival, while Saunderson will play Mercutio, a close friend of Romeo's.
Other cast members include Camaron Engels (Malibu Rescue) as Romeo, Francesca Noel (Selah and the Spades) as Juliet and RJ Cyler (Power Rangers) as Benvolio.
The movie, which will be told from the perspective of mobile phones and computer screens, will be produced by Timur Bekmambetov and Igor Tsay, while the script was co-written by Rickie Castaneda and director Carey Williams.
Tinoco was last seen in the third season of On My Block, which aired its finale last month. The series follows a group of four high school friends who are faced with the challenges of adolescence in their predominantly Hispanic and black neighbourhood in LA.
Tinoco plays Cesar Diaz, a bright teenager who is pulled away from his friends and into a life of crime.
The Shakespeare play has been adapted multiple times for the screen, most recently notably with Baz Luhrmann's 1996 MTV-inspired Romeo + Juliet starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes.
On My Block is available on Netflix. R#J is yet to get a release date.
