Roseanne Barr joined Sean Hannity for her first TV interview since a controversial tweet about Valerie Jarrett got her ABC show Roseanne canceled in May. Though the subjects of the interview covered everything from Barr’s mental health issues to her disastrous performance of the National Anthem, the main focus was the tweet in which she said the former adviser to Barack Obama was a mix between the Muslim Brotherhood and Planet of the Apes. Many saw the tweet as racist, but Barr insists it was politically motivated.
“That is a tweet about asking for accountability from the previous administration about the Iran deal, which Valerie Jarrett is the author of,” Barr said. “And that was what was in my head.”
She has vehemently maintained that she thought Jarrett was white. Barr, who has repeatedly apologized, this time looked into the camera and apologized directly to Jarrett, not so much for the tweet but for what she perceives to be a misunderstanding.
“I’m so sorry that you thought I was racist and that you thought my tweet was racist, because it wasn’t,” Barr said. “It was political. And I’m sorry for the misunderstanding that caused my ill-worded tweet. And I’m sorry that you feel harmed and hurt. I never meant that. And for that I apologize.”
Unfortunately, in her typical fashion, the comedian didn’t stop there, adding, “Plus I’d tell her she’s gotta get a new haircut — I mean seriously, she needs a new haircut.”
And though, given what she had to say during a recent visit to The View, Jarrett seemingly has no interest in doing so, Barr sounded as if she’d like to clear the air personally. Again speaking directly to Jarrett, she said, “Valerie, let’s discuss this. Don’t assume that you know what I meant, because I think you don’t know what I meant, and I would like to make it clearer to you what I did mean. And I would like to find a way past all that to really discuss the issue at hand and to try to find common ground between us.”
