Christmas is not going to be normal for anyone this year, and that goes for the British Royal Family, too. Although up to three households in the UK have been allowed to gather for five days over the festive period, the Queen and Prince Philip have made the decision to spend Christmas just the two of them at Windsor castle this month, choosing to skip the usual festivities at Sandringham.

According to a statement from Buckingham Palace, the senior Royals have decided not to create a Christmas bubble, choosing instead to err on the side of caution as we continue to battle the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Having considered all the appropriate advice, the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh have decided that this year they will spend Christmas quietly in Windsor,” the statement read.

A Royal Christmas typically involves large numbers of the family gathering together at the Sandringham estate, where they then walk to church on Christmas Day, meeting and greeting members of the public before the service.

It has not yet been confirmed how other senior Royals will be spending their festive breaks, but it is likely that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will remain in Los Angeles, where they now live, while the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge could spend Christmas at one of their homes in Norfolk or Kensington Palace, or they may choose to bubble up with some other family members.
