Rumour About New Spider-Man’s Web Shooters

A new rumour has surfaced about Marvel and Sony’s ‘Spider-Man’ reboot (I know, we weren’t expecting any of those, were we…? Ahem.)

Following on from Sam Raimi’s original ‘Spider-Man’ trilogy and Marc Webb’s more recent ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ and its sequel, there are many questions to be asked abut how the MCU’s Spidey played by Tom Holland will stand apart.

One pertinent question (for the nit-pickers among us, at least) regards the new Spider-Man’s web shooters. Will they be mechanical and of Peter Parker’s own invention, as in the original comics and the Webb/Andrew Garfield films - or will they be organic, part of his spider-powers, as in the Raimi/Tobey Maguire films?

Perpetual movie gossip-mongers Latino Review claim to have the answer - and, as you might expect, it’s potentially a spoiler, so don’t read on if you’d rather go in cold…

As you may be aware, Holland’s Spidey will make his screen debut in next year’s ‘Captain America: Civil War,’ establishing the character right away as part of the MCU, and paving the way to his own, as-yet untitled solo movie co-produced by Marvel and Sony, due summer 2017.

According to LR’s sources, Spidey’s brief appearance in ‘Civil War’ sees him meeting Robert Downey Jr’s Tony Stark - but this does not mean we will see the Iron Spider suit, built for Spider-Man by Stark in Marvel’s original ‘Civil War’ comic series.

However, word is that Stark will create something else for Spidey- his web shooters.

This would be an entirely logical move in establishing Spider-Man in the MCU, and would also suggest Holland’s Peter Parker will get more from Stark than just those devices.

And even if we don’t get Iron Spider, it seems fair to assume Stark will also provide the proper Spider-Man suit, with Holland initially wearing a cruder homemade outfit, probably not too far removed from what Maguire wore in the original ‘Spider-Man’ movie’s wrestling sequence.

Still, if this is on the level it’s likely to divide fan opinion. As much as Peter Parker is a dorky everyman figure, he is still meant to be a true science wiz in his own right, as we see from him creating the web shooters and his costume on his own. While this needn’t be a deal-breaking detail, it might be a shame to lose that element of the character for the sake of the broader MCU.

Even so, take it all with the usual big pinch of salt for now - and hopefully we’ll find out if it’s true when ‘Captain America: Civil War’ lands on 29 April 2016.
