Rumour: How Each Side Shapes Up In Captain America: Civil War

We know ‘Captain America: Civil War’ is going to have a monster cast of superheroes, one even bigger than ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ but who will they side with during Cap and Iron Man’s ideological battle?

Heroic Hollywood thinks it knows, and while the teams are somewhat logical, there is something of a surprise in there with Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow reportedly set to go against her friend Steve Rogers.

Of course this is all just a rumour at this point, but given - as mentioned - the teams are easy enough to guess for the most part, there’s a little less room for error than one might first think.

First, the story. An event which occurs on the Avengers’, led by Chris Evans’ Captain America, watch leads to a US government drive for new legislation which would require superheroes to register their identity with the authorities. Iron Man supports this, Cap does not.

So, the expected team-ups. Anthony Mackie’s Falcon and Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man are said to side with Captain America, while Paul Bettany’s The Vision and Don Cheadle’s War Machine look to be siding with Robert Downey Jr’s Tony Stark.

Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye siding with Cap makes sense given he has a family his secret identity protects, which is why its a little strange to see Tom Holland’s Spider-Man on the side of Iron Man.

In the comic story on which Civil War is based, Spider-Man does side with Stark but goes through a change of heart. He also reveals his secret identity publicly, but given that Spidey had been around longer and the MCU’s is new to it all, it seems unlikely that will happen on film.

Rounding off Team Cap there’s Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlett Witch and Sebastian Stan’s Winter Soldier - whose role in the movie remains mysterious. Then on Team Shellhead there’s Black Widow - whose friendship with Cap was properly established in Winter Soldier.

A big element of the comic story was the changing of sides, which is likely to figure here in some form - possibly with a double agent - but probably not to the same extent as to not confuse audiences too much.

Marvel boss Kevin Feige has already stated that Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther - who makes his debut in the film - will be neutral in the conflict

As for the sides themselves, they’re certainly plausible and ripe for drama - particularly in the case of Widow vs Cap and Iron Man vs Winter Soldier. We’ll see how it all unfolds when the film is released on 29 April 2016.
